Former Arsenal defender Sagna explains why he chose the Gunners instead of Manchester United. When he joined the north London team, he was still an unknown youngster developing at Auxerre in Ligue 1. Despite being linked with Manchester United, Sagna has now revealed he would prefer a move to the Emirates Stadium rather than Old Trafford because Arsenal have more French players.
Sagna: "Arsenal is a French team and for me it was a smoother way to get into English football by joining a team with a French player base. My English was okay because I learned it in school, but then I realized it was completely different from what it was like in real life because people spoke with accents and slang."
"So for me, It's a good way to get into English football, and the team is young, which makes it easier because we're the same age. If I went to a team like Manchester United, where there are a lot of big-name players, I think it would be harder for me to adapt, and the Arsenal coach is also French."
After leaving Arsenal in 2014, Sagna joined Manchester United's rivals Manchester City on a free transfer. Wenger himself may have been one of the important factors in Sagna's decision to join Arsenal. Although the Gunners had just lost French legend Henry and Vieira left the team two years ago, when Sagna joined, there were French players such as Clichy, Diaby and Flamini in the Arsenal team.
