According to foreign media Wccftech, after Intel's new executive director Chen Liwu took office, he adopted an aggressive strategy to complete the entire foundry department and clearly stated that he would make "difficult decisions" and decide on company reorganization and product blueprint changes. In addition to the announcement of stopping the promotion of Intel 18A process, he will make every effort to develop Intel 14A, and now he will stop developing glass substrates.
Although Intel has been cultivating glass substrates for many years and has achieved a relatively leading position, it is now considering stopping these past efforts and using external suppliers to provide glass substrates. The main purpose of this decision is to reduce operating costs and focus on core businesses including CPU development and crystal circle manufacturing. This means that Intel's determination to stop the plan of not having enough value to cut down on operating costs.
In terms of crystal foundry, Intel has never met expectations, especially in terms of cooperation with partners, the key Intel 18A has been deeply troubled by delays and inconsistencies. Intel's key updates show that it will reduce the impact of Intel 18A market and stop sales in order to reduce the cost of the crystal foundry department.
However, this does not mean the end of the Intel round-rod process, because we are determined to use Intel 18A for our own products, such as the production of Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest processors. But expectations for general adoption of Intel 18A will decline.
In the context of strategy adjustment, there are also some news about Intel 18A’s cooperation with external parties. Intel has signed an Intel 18A contract with Microsoft, and Google, NVIDIA and others have also queued to download it. NVIDIA, Broadcom, Faraday and many ASIC customers are also testing Intel 18A, and the chip delivery results are impressive. Although Intel restricts Intel’s 18A sales, it still maintains strategic cooperation with important customers.
Intel clearly believes that Intel 14A can compete with NT$1. The Direct Connect 2025 Cylinder Foundry Department also revealed the leading process plan and announced the Intel 14A and Intel 18A improved versions. To enable Intel 14A to achieve sales targets, order support from large customers is still required. There seems to be doubts about whether it can be achieved.
